WAGS stands for Water And Gas Safety Valve and it means Protection For You.

Water and Gas Safety Shut-off Valve

The Taco WAGS is essential Protection Against Water Heater Leaks. The Taco WAGS valve is designed to shut off the water supply (plus the gas supply for gas-fired heaters) in the event of a water leak from a hot water heater, thus minimizing water damage and possible gas leakage. The valve can be installed on all styles of water heaters. WAGS (Water and Gas Safety Valve) is designed to catch water heater leaks before they become floods and shut off both water and gas feeds before disaster can strike.

The WAGS Valve is the only product of its kind that shuts off both gas and water feeds in the event of a water leak.WAGS can also be installed on any non-gas hot water heater and requires no electrical connections making it extremely reliable and economical. The valve can also be used with oil fired water heaters as well as electric water heaters to shut off the water. The Taco WAGS Water and Gas Safety Shut-off Valve is fully mechanical and requires no external power supply. WAGS will shut off water to other tanks, fixtures and appliances too, such as boilers, pumps and well tanks.

Taco WAGS provides essential protection against water heater leaks.
Your water heater will eventually fail and leak – fact of life! Most water heaters fail within 7-10 years. That’s about 5 million tank failures EVERY year. Without a WAGS valve, a leaking tank keeps refilling – and leaking. The Taco WAGS Water and Gas Safety Shut-off Valve prevents disastrous floods and untold damage to your property.

The Taco WAGS sits in a drip pan under the water heater and is activated when leaking water accumulates to a level of ¾” in the pan. Once activated, the WAGS valve shuts off the water and gas supply, indicated by a red pop-up tab.

When a water heater tank fails, the Taco WAGS Water and Gas Safety Shut-off Valve

Shuts off the water supply

Shuts off gas on gas-fired heaters

WAGS will shut the water feed off on electric and oil fired heaters too.

Round-the-clock peace of mind!

Prevents costly water damage of a flood from a leaking water heater

Alleviates related gas safety concerns

Minimizes inconvenience

It’s Guaranteed!
Since 1920, Taco, Inc. has earned the trust of HVAC and plumbing professionals around the world with high quality, innovative equipment known for performance and durability.

An undetected leak spells disaster.
When a water heater leak goes unnoticed, the tank keeps refilling — and leaking. Soon, water pressure turns a small crack into a gash, releasing hundreds, even thousands, of gallons of water into the dwelling. Imagine the damage to your floors and possessions! What’s more, a gas-fired water heater poses an additional risk, since water can snuff out the pilot light, allowing gas to escape.

$1,000 Lifetime Protection Policy
Taco will reimburse the owner of a Taco WAGS valve their insurance deductible, up to $1,000, if a properly installed WAGS valve fails to detect a water heater leak and subsequently shut off the water feed, resulting in excessive water damage.

How the Taco WAGS Valve Works

WAGS water and gas safety valve by Taco

How the Taco WAGS Works
A drip pan is installed under your water heater. The Taco WAGS Water and Gas Safety Shut-off Valve is attached between the water source and the water heater. When leaking water fills the pan to a depth of 3/4″, a water-soluble fiber element in the WAGS dissolves, releasing a powerful spring-loaded piston that closes the flow of water to the tank. In gas-fired water heaters, this action also breaks a fuse that shuts off the gas supply to the heater. This fiber-element technology was first used by the British Royal Air Force to inflate life jackets automatically. WAGS Valves are highly reliable, totally mechanical, and requires no additional power source.

WAGS Valves Approved/ demand grows for new condos and apartment water heater installations.

WAGS Valve Approved by NSF and Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and gas fitters.
TACO WAGS Valve was approved by NSF and Mass. Board At the April 3 meeting of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gasfitters (Mass. Board) the WAGS valve gained approval under the Massachusetts Plumbing Code (CMR248 2.00). On February 21, 2002 NSF International certified that the WAGS valve conformed to the requirements of ANSI / NSF Standard 61 – Drinking Water System Components – Health Effects. NSF 61 covers devices (used to measure or control flow installed on a service line or building distribution system downstream of the water main and before endpoint devices), components, and materials used therein which are used in treatment / transmission / distribution systems, and are in contact with drinking water intended for human ingestion, drinking water treatment chemicals, or both.

Florida condo owners approve WAGS for protection
After one too many water heater failures caused property damage for condo owners and their neighbors alike, the board of the Sun n’ Surf Condo Complex in Palm Beach, Florida, voted to retrofit some 240 units with the WAGS valve and make WAGS mandatory on all new installations.

Let us install this new water and gas safety valve on your new water heater replacement!

Northern New Jersey’s best plumbing company!

What a few pervious clients have said.

“Just wanted to say, “Give Mike the dispatcher a raise!” He was more than helpful over the phone in helping us avert a potential problem with our new boiler that you guys installed last spring after the freak flood.” S.M.
“We had noise in the pipes, and he was able to troubleshoot the problem without charging us a cent.
This is old-fashioned neighborly business practices, and goodwill that you just don’t find these days anywhere.
Thank you, All Week! We’ll never need to go anywhere else!” M.W.

In short Yes, you can also use a traditional gas water heater as well.

However…..

They are not designed for that so the tank will break down faster than they normally would, and the manufacturing companies know this, so using a standard water heater will void it’’s original manufactures warranty.

Your better bet would be going with a real storage stank. SuperStor is a high quality brand that comes in two versions, glass lined, and stainless steal lined. The glass lines storage tank will last for about 10 – 15 years, it’ cost isn’t the lowest but the Superstor storage tank is probably the best for your money, based on a quality/ price point. The Stainless steal lined tank from Supersor is regarded as the industry leader for indirect storage tanks. They come with a life time warranty, however like anything else, you must pay for quality. The stainless steal tanks go for around 1,100 – 1,300 dollars. Boch, Lochinvar, Mega store, and Rudd all offer high quality indirect storage tanks as well and are similarly priced.

Electric water heaters weren’t designed to handle water over 140 degrees, and older boilers may add water as hot as 180 into the tank, so it’s a good idea to add a thermostatic mixing valve to the supply side of the tank. It’s the only effective way to protect a thermostatic mixing valve.

Mike Homes is an incredible general contractor in Canada. Some might say he is the best in the business, and even Hollywood has made him a star with his own award winning show about contracting “the right way”.

For those of you that don’t know, Mike Holmes is dead set on “doing the job right the first time”. In his show on the HG TV network he saves home owners from contracting disasters. All of his clients/ featured home owners on the show are victims of shotty workman ship, and Mike Holmes and his crew of primer trades men come to save the day.

Home owners like you are being taking advantage of every day by un licensed contractors, or licensed contractors that don’t take pride in there work, take short cuts, or simply don’t know what they are doing and shouldn’t even be licensed.

When selecting a plumbing contractor and any contractor for that matter you must do your home work. Just because a guy calls himself a plumber and has a business card that unfortunately doesn’t mean the guy has any clue what he is doing. Anyone can print up a business card and call themselves what ever they want. Also many people are illegally using other peoples licenses for a fee, or plain just stealing the license number and printing it on there own cards. Crazy yes, but very true.

I personally know a guy that owns a “plumbing company” that has zero experience in plumbing, he was an insurance adjuster, but wanted to own his own business so he printed some cards, paid a retired plumber a monthly fee to use his license number bought a couple used vans, and got an ad in the yellow pages and he was on his way. Now I don’t expect his company to last long but it’s been a year and he is still in business, ripping off customers on a daily basis.

When you meet a contractor do yourself a big favor and Google Search the name on the card. Then the company name. Good or bad you should find something. Hopefully a website with great pictures of the work they have done, and comments from real people they have performed the work for. If you can’t find anything of substance. Move on. Would a successful contractor not have a website? They should, in the age of the internet even if they don’t you certainly will still find some comments on a website, or message board some where.

For example. Our in house plumber for Connecticut Bruce Somers has been a licensed plumber for 25 years. He is “old school” no yellow page ads, spends no money on traditional advertisement /marketing. However if you Google search -Bruce Somers Plumbing- you will see an incredible amount of info online. It’s 2010 that’s the way it is. If you can’t find any information about a contractor your thinking about using think again, he or she is a “part time” contractor as best.

If you have a serious plumbing problem and need the best plumber in the business you need to talk to Bruce Somers, of Bruce Somers plumbing. It’s that simple so give us a call and Bruce will be over to solve your hard to solve plumbing problems. He has watched every episode of Mike Holmes a few times and emulates his approach which is getting things done correct the first time with no short cuts.

800-524-4280

Fully licensed and insured.

Don’t get ripped off! If you need a quality plumber in Connecticut, Mass, New York, New Jersey, RI, give us a call and put your worries behind you.

Best regards from the Waterheatinginfo.com team.

We have talked about tankless water heaters on this site many times in the past, about how they work, how they save you money, how to find an installer, what you can expect to pay, shown you a few pictures, and much more. This post is going to be a bit different. This is going to be a installation “walk threw” with/in pictures. It should be enjoyable and will provide you with some great info, as well as so visual stimulation.

What we have here are 20 high quality pictures of one of our latest Navien tankless water heater installations.

Home owner price note: Our price was about a thousand dollars higher than the other 3 estimates our client got on his own. However we were installing two (2) Navien tankless water heaters which truly will provide endless hot water, where as every other company was just installing one which may not have met demand of this large and growing family. The home owner wanted to “go green”, and also wanted to increase the living space in his basement. A tankless water heater is the only way to go for accomplishing both needs. This job wasn’t easy by any means, having two units means we had to pull a full 1.25″ gas line from the meter to the units. Also working in tight places makes the installation longer just for the simple fact that one guy is always getting in the other guys way. We work very well as a team, and the installation speaks for it’s self. Enjoy.

Here is our clients house.

It’s not polite to brag but….

We are one of the very best plumbing companies in the business of installing tankless water heaters. For the simple fact that we install 2 – 3 a week, every single week. By installing so many of them we are able to install one, and remove the old tank in one day. We also get better prices than 95% of all plumbers/ plumbing companies in our area because of the volume of units we purchase. By getting the units at lower prices, and installing them quickly, and by being able to over come all if any obstacles we are able to offer prices that are regularly 500 – 1,000 lower than other local plumbing companies estimate/ prices we “compete” with.

Price match guarantee.

We have never had to use it once yet, but we proudly offer a price match on any other licensed/ insured plumbing companies “realistic” written quote on the same tankless water heater, and installation.

The tankless water heater we used for this installation was a Navien 210 & Navien 240a

We love Navien for many reasons, but also have access to many other brands of tankless water heaters, and are happy to install a brand other than Navien. However we will not install a low quality unit, (anything from home depot) because we won’t take the chance of having any call backs. We won’t risk our reputation on installing junk products. We also don’t normally install electric tankless water heaters for a few reasons we can talk about over the phone.

Please take a look at a few of our past Navien tankless water heater installations, and repairs.

Don’t get ripped off by someone that says they do plumbing side jobs. You will pay good money for someone that is under qualified, doesn’t deserve the work, and doesn’t know the little things that make experienced plumbers worth the money by saving home owners like you big money performing plumbing repairs/ not plumbing replacements!

Many people have two or more jobs to keep their bills paid on time, saving for college, or to catch up on past bills, medical bill, or maybe saving for a vacation. It makes perfect sense that someone can have more than one profession, but not in all cases. Can your lawyer also be a politician? Yes. Can your real estate agent also own a small florist shop? Yes. These and many other combination make complete sense. However can your local police man also be a plumber? Would a guy that normally is employed as a tree cutter also be a plumber? I don’t know about that.

Why would someone walk away from a high paying, in demand job for something else which requires more hours, and less money? If you go to your local home depot and walk down the plumbing isle, most likely there is a guy in the plumbing section will tell you he is “real plumber” when he’s not working at home depot. lol. How can this be true? Would you work at home depot for 12-13 dollars an hour, when as a plumber you could make more than 2, 3, or 4 times than that amount working as a plumber full time? Probably not. So you have to ask yourself. Does a guy that works in the plumbing department qualify as a quality plumber? In some cases far and few between maybe, and the majority of these people are just trying to make some extra money “on the side” when they tell you they want to do a plumbing job for you.

Unless you like the idea of paying good money for poor workmanship do yourself a favor and stay away from people and companies that do plumbing and drain cleaning “on the side”. We all know the old saying, “You get what you pay for”. Plumbing is no different. Plumbing is no joke. Setting bath tubs, setting shower pans, roughing in new shower valves are just a few tasks that take real skill. Diagnosing plumbing problems, and tricky heating issues are hard to understand and even explain for home owners, and getting the correct answers and a course of action to solve the plumbing problem require decades of on the job training, and encountering these problems first hand in the past to have the answers. Plumbers like Bruce Somers have the experience by being experienced! By encountering, and solving every problem you can possibly imagine in the past already. When your “handy man” or part time plumber says “we need to replace this water heater, and I’ll do it for a few hundred bucks labor”. It may sound like a good deal, but not if you knew that the water heater could be fixed easily for a small fraction of replacing the water heater! A guy doing plumbing “on the side” doesn’t know squat about real diagnosis of water heater problems where as a real plumber with many years of expertise would.

If you’re trying to save money and your toilet is clogged, or you have some leaky faucets which require new washers by all means call a friend, or find any person that calls himself a plumber, and has the tools to do the job, because those plumbing tasks are extremely basic. But don’t trust these people with your larger plumbing tasks like installing your new tankless water heater unless you want problems down the road.

Everyone needs to save money, and search for better deals now more than ever but don’t get yourself in trouble by hiring the wrong person, or plumber for the job.

Don’t let your general contractor “help you” save money by doing the plumbing him, or herself.
Don’t let some “handy man” do your plumbing.

Chances are they will charge you as much as a reputable plumbing company like our own Bruce Somers Plumbing would, but they will provide much lower quality workman ship.

Do you like the idea of ripping an entire shower down to the sub floor because your “plumber “, or guy doing a side job forgot to double up on a wax ring, or check the new shower valve for leaks before the walls get fished.

I can go on forever, but it’s not necessary. If you have a plumbing problem large or small do yourself a favor and get a free estimate from us before or after you have met with other quote unquote plumbers.
It might possibly save you thousands of dollars. As it did for our client Kevin. Read his lovely testimony he was nice enough to take the time to write us.

Hi

Just spoke to J. Sullivan and I want to say he was most helpful to me and answered every question I had regarding Navien and also gave me some pointers that are invaluable to me in getting started with a new heating and hot water system. I’m in Wyoming and Mr. Sullivan is in CT so there was nothing in this phone call for him regarding business and yet he took the time to answer all my questions – I would buy Navien just because of him!

Ron from WY

————————————————

We appreciate all our comments, but I wanted to make this one an individual post because Ron was nice enough to write this on our behalf.

Our conversation stated with Ron asking us what kind of tankless water heaters we like the best currently. I told Ron all about how tankless heaters work, and the pros and cons of all tankless water heaters. We also gave him an idea of what they should cost and the installation price should be around. We have great success with all of our Navien heaters installations, and suggested the new Navien combi boiler for his water heater replacement. He needed a new water heater, and his boiler was running on borrowed time. A good opportunity to upgrade to a new Navien combi boiler.
A new Navien combi boiler/domestic hot water heater cost less than a new boiler, and replace both the boiler and the water heater with one small powerful energy saving unit. It uses less than half the energy than traditional boilers, and hot water heaters do over the coarse of a year. Half the energy = half of the utility bills.

It’s true I took the time to tell Ron everything I felt would be useful for making his decision about his next water heater purchase, and we will do the same for you.

————————————————————————————–

The thumb nail picture from the front page is not a real picture of Ron, it’s what we think he might look like. lol.
